Modified PTFE (TFM)
Modified PTFE (mPTFE), also known under former brand names like TFM®, is a chemically enhanced version of standard PTFE. Thanks to molecular modifications it delivers superior properties for demanding applications.
Vanéflon offers a reliable alternative to discontinued brands like Dyneon/3M’s TFM®, supplying high-quality mPTFE products in a wide range of formats.
Key properties
- High temperature resistance: -200 to 260°C
- Food contact: FDA compliant – EU 10/2011
- Reduced porosity
- Very high elongation at break (higher than PTFE)
- Improved creep resistance
- Good electrical insulating properties
- Best anti-adhesive properties
- Excellent weldability

Need advice on modified PTFE?
Choosing the right material is crucial. Whether you’re replacing discontinued TFM grades or designing new components, Vanéflon’s technical team is ready to help.
Why choose modified PTFE?
Compared to standard PTFE, modified PTFE offers distinct technical advantages:
- Lower porosity: less permeation, ideal for sealing and chemical containment of gasesTeflon™ is the best known brand name for PTFE.
- Higher elongation at break: improved flexibility and mechanical resilience
- Smoother surface finish: enhanced cleanliness and sealing performance
- Reduced cold flow: better dimensional stability under load
- Superior fatigue resistance: longer life in dynamic applications
- Weldable: supports advanced fabrication techniques
- FDA & EU 10/2011 compliant: suitable for food and medical use
Excellent electrical insulation and thermal resistance up to 260°C
Where is modified PTFE used?
Modified PTFE is ideal for industries where precision, purity, and durability are critical:
- Chemical processing and storage
- Semiconductors and electronics
- Medical applications
- Food and beverage industry
- Oil & gas
- Hydrogen systems
- Aerospace
- Automotive engineering
About TFM® and current alternatives
TFM® was a commercial brand name for modified PTFE grades that are no longer available. Vanéflon offers equivalent high-performance mPTFE materials with the same or improved specifications.
Modified PTFE is also available with various compounds (glass, carbon, graphite,…) to enhance mechanical strength, wear resistance and stability.
