PCTFE Sheets

When a flat component has to seal reliably, stay dimensionally stable under load and hold a strong barrier against moisture and gas, PCTFE is the fluoropolymer engineers reach for. Vanéflon produces PCTFE sheets and plates as semi-finished stock, compression-moulded to tight tolerances and ready to be machined into gaskets, seals, valve components and other precision parts. Standard thicknesses are available from stock, and custom sizes are cut to your exact requirements.

You will sometimes see this material referred to by its trade names Kel-F, Neoflon or Aclon. Whichever your drawing specifies, it is the same base polymer, and Vanéflon can supply it as sheet, plate or finished part.

What is PCTFE?

PCTFE stands for polychlorotrifluoroethylene, a high-performance fluoropolymer in the same family as PTFE. The difference sits in the molecule: PCTFE replaces one fluorine atom with chlorine, and that single change makes the material noticeably more rigid, harder and more dimensionally stable, with far lower gas and moisture permeability. Those qualities, rather than low friction, are what define where PCTFE earns its place.

The material was first sold as Kel-F and is produced today as Neoflon. The Kel-F name is no longer on the market, but it is still used widely across the industry, so you will encounter all these terms describing the same polymer. A useful property of PCTFE is that, in thinner and low-crystalline form, it becomes optically clear, which opens up applications that most fluoropolymers cannot serve.

Properties of PCTFE sheets

PCTFE sits at the top end of the fluoropolymer range, and in sheet form its characteristics make it indispensable for sealing, high-purity and low-temperature work:

  • Exceptional dimensional stability and high resistance to cold flow, so gaskets and machined parts hold their tolerances under sustained load.
  • Excellent cryogenic performance, keeping mechanical integrity down to extremely low temperatures.
  • Outstanding gas and moisture barrier, with the lowest water vapour transmission rate of the common fluoropolymers.
  • Very low outgassing, which makes PCTFE suitable for vacuum and aerospace applications.
  • Optical transparency in thin, low-crystalline form, ideal for sight glasses and windows.
  • Excellent chemical resistance to most acids, bases and oxidising agents.
  • Non-flammable with a high limiting oxygen index, plus radiation resistance and stable electrical insulation.
  • Food contact compliant, meeting FDA and EU 10/2011 requirements.

Compression-moulded PCTFE sheets and plates

The production route matters for a flat part. Alongside sheet cut from larger stock, Vanéflon produces PCTFE plates and billets using cold and hot compression moulding. Moulding gives constant material quality and uniform, ultra-low residual stress across the whole plate, which is exactly what high-precision machining of gaskets and seals demands. Lower residual stress means tighter, more stable tolerances and significantly less machining scrap.

With hundreds of moulds in house, we press plates as close to your final dimensions as possible, a near-net approach that reduces machining time, cuts material waste and shortens lead times.

If your project calls for a size we do not already hold, Vanéflon can produce its own moulds at short notice. Every PCTFE sheet leaves our facility with full traceability and certification, and post-treatment such as tempering, grinding and cutting is available on request.

Thicknesses, dimensions and cut-to-size

Vanéflon supplies PCTFE sheets and plates across a wide range of thicknesses and dimensions. Standard sizes are typically held in stock for fast delivery, while custom thicknesses and formats are produced to your specification. Our cut-to-size service means you receive sheet that is ready to machine, with tight and repeatable tolerances.

Tell us the thickness, length and width you need, along with your application, and we will confirm availability, tolerances and lead time.

Transparent PCTFE for sight glasses and windows

In thin, low-crystalline form PCTFE becomes optically clear, with the material looking similar to glass. Combined with its chemical resistance and near-zero moisture absorption, this makes transparent PCTFE sheet a proven choice for sight glasses, observation windows and inspection ports in aggressive process environments where ordinary glass would fail. If your application calls for a see-through, chemically resistant panel, PCTFE is worth considering.

Low outgassing for aerospace and vacuum

PCTFE has extremely low outgassing, which is why it is trusted for aerospace, flight and vacuum applications where contamination and material loss cannot be tolerated. In sheet form it serves as structural material, insulation and moisture-barrier components for sensitive electronics and instrumentation.

Applications of PCTFE sheets

PCTFE sheets and plates are machined and fabricated into parts wherever reliability is non-negotiable:

  • Gaskets and seals cut from sheet for low-temperature, high-pressure sealing.
  • Cryogenics and energy: valve seats, seals and components for liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and LNG.
  • Aerospace: low-outgassing structural and sealing components across extreme temperatures.
  • Semiconductor: high-purity parts where contamination must be avoided.
  • Chemical processing: sight glasses, liners and components for aggressive media.
  • Pharmaceutical and life science: moisture-barrier and sterile-contact parts backed by food and pharma compliance.

PCTFE compared to PTFE, PFA, PVDF and PEEK

Choosing a fluoropolymer is a question of the application.

  • Compared to PTFE and PFA, PCTFE is harder, more rigid and more dimensionally stable, with a far better moisture and gas barrier and the advantage of optical transparency, which is why it wins for precision cryogenic sealing and sight glasses.
  • PTFE remains the softer, lower-friction and more cost-effective choice for less demanding tolerances, PVDF offers a strong balance of chemical resistance and mechanical strength at a lower cost, and PEEK delivers higher mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.
  •  PCTFE is more expensive than PTFE, but for cryogenic, vacuum and high-end aerospace work it remains indispensable.

PCTFE sheet or PCTFE film?

The two are related but serve different purposes. PCTFE sheet and plate are rigid, semi-finished stock intended for machining into gaskets, seals and precision parts.

PCTFE film is a much thinner product, often used as a moisture barrier in pharmaceutical blister packaging and as a laminating layer.

If you need a machinable, self-supporting flat stock, sheet or plate is what you are after. For film applications, get in touch and we will point you in the right direction.
