PCTFE bushings
PCTFE bushings are used in applications where maintaining precise dimensions under demanding operating conditions is critical. Thanks to its high rigidity, excellent dimensional stability, low cold flow and outstanding performance at extremely low temperatures, PCTFE is particularly well suited for precision bushings in cryogenic, aerospace, semiconductor and chemical applications.

Why choose PCTFE for bushings?
PCTFE, or polychlorotrifluoroethylene, is a high-performance fluoropolymer known for combining chemical resistance with considerably higher rigidity and dimensional stability than conventional PTFE.
For bushings, guides and sleeves, this combination is particularly valuable because the component often needs to maintain its shape and internal diameter while exposed to mechanical load, temperature changes or aggressive media.

These characteristics make PCTFE an attractive material when a standard polymer does not provide sufficient stability or when a fluoropolymer needs to perform in extreme low-temperature conditions.
PCTFE bushings for cryogenic applications
One of the most important applications for PCTFE is cryogenic equipment.At extremely low temperatures, maintaining the geometry and clearances of a component becomes particularly important. Materials expand and contract during thermal cycling, which can influence the movement, alignment and sealing performance of an assembly.
PCTFE combines excellent low-temperature properties with low cold flow and high rigidity. This makes it a valuable material for bushings, guides and sleeves used in cryogenic valve components, pumps and fluid-handling systems.
A PCTFE guide bushing can, for example, be used to support and guide a valve stem throughout its movement while maintaining a controlled clearance between the stem and surrounding components.
For critical cryogenic applications, the exact PCTFE grade, dimensions, tolerances and operating conditions should always be evaluated as part of the complete component design.
PCTFE bushings versus PTFE bushings
Although PCTFE and PTFE both belong to the fluoropolymer family, they offer different performance characteristics.
- Dimensional stability: PCTFE holds its dimensions far more reliably under load, while PTFE is more prone to dimensional change over time.
- Rigidity: PCTFE is highly rigid and maintains its geometry under load, while PTFE is relatively soft, making it more forgiving but less precise.
- Resistance to cold flow: PCTFE resists creep well and keeps its shape over long service periods, while PTFE is more prone to slowly deforming under sustained pressure.
- Cryogenic performance: PCTFE offers excellent performance at extremely low temperatures, while PTFE performs very well but has a slight edge behind PCTFE in the most demanding cryogenic conditions.
- Moisture and gas permeability: PCTFE has extremely low permeability, making it the stronger barrier material, while PTFE’s permeability is low but not as low as PCTFE’s.
- Friction: PCTFE has higher friction than PTFE, while PTFE offers very low friction, making it the better choice for dynamic, sliding applications.
- Maximum continuous temperature: PCTFE has a lower maximum continuous temperature than PTFE, while PTFE can be used at higher sustained temperatures, giving it a wider operating window on the hot end.
- Typical reason for selection: PCTFE is typically chosen for precision, rigidity and cryogenic stability, while PTFE is typically chosen for low friction and chemical resistance.
A PCTFE bushing is therefore not necessarily the best choice when achieving the lowest possible friction is the main design requirement. For dynamic bearing applications where friction and wear resistance are the primary concern, PTFE compounds containing fillers such as graphite, carbon or bronze may be a more suitable solution.
PCTFE becomes particularly interesting when dimensional stability, low deformation and performance at extremely low temperatures are more important than achieving the lowest possible coefficient of friction.

Custom-machined PCTFE bushings
PCTFE bushings are generally manufactured according to the dimensions and tolerances required by the surrounding assembly. Vanéflon produces custom bushings, sleeves and other PCTFE components using high-precision CNC machining.
Bushings can be produced with customer-specific inside and outside diameters, lengths, wall thicknesses, shoulders, flanges, grooves, chamfers and other geometric features.
Vanéflon operates more than 35 high-precision CNC lathes and milling machines, including 4- and 5-axis equipment. Across our machined-parts production, components can range from very small precision parts to large complex geometries. Depending on the part geometry, dimensions and application, extremely tight machining tolerances are possible.
